Set up CarGo
Setup takes place in two apps. In the Ring app, turn on CarGo for your cameras. In the CarGo app, add your vehicles and enable alerts.
Step by step
Connect in the Ring app
Find CarGo in the Ring Appstore and turn it on for each camera that sees your street or driveway.
Confirm the connection
Open the CarGo app. When the Ring connection is complete, it shows Account linked and lists the cameras CarGo watches.
Add your vehicle
Under Vehicles, tap Add a vehicle, name it, and teach CarGo what it looks like using one of the four methods below.
Turn on notifications
Allow notifications when CarGo asks. Alerts will then reach your phone. Email alerts are optional.
Install it on your phone
Add CarGo to your home screen so it opens like another app. This is required for notifications on iPhone and iPad. See the steps below.
Four ways to add a vehicle
Each method gives CarGo pictures of your vehicle from your cameras. Choose one. You can add more later.
Choose it from a clip
Enter when your vehicle passed and which camera saw it. CarGo retrieves the clip and shows the vehicles in it so you can select yours.
Search the last 7 days
CarGo searches clips from the last 7 days and displays the vehicles it finds. Select yours. This step is optional.
Share from the Ring app
On Android, open the clip in the Ring app, tap Share, then Share a Video Link, and select CarGo. CarGo reads the video's time, identifies the camera, and shows the vehicles it found.
Learn as you go
Add the vehicle with only a name, then tap Mine when it appears in Sightings. CarGo starts with no memory of the vehicle and learns from your taps.
The Ring app settings that matter
CarGo can only see clips recorded by your Ring camera. Settings in the Ring app determine which clips are recorded.
Smart Alerts: Vehicle on
In the Ring app, open the menu (☰), tap Devices, select your camera, then tap Motion Settings and Smart Alerts. Make sure Vehicle is recording. Smart Alerts require a Ring subscription.
Busy cameras: Other Motion off
On the same Smart Alerts screen, turn Other Motion off for a camera that records frequently. Shadows, branches, rain, and pets can trigger clips, but they cannot be your vehicle. Keep Vehicle on.
Motion Zones cover the street
Under Motion Settings, make sure the Motion Zones cover the street or driveway where your vehicles pass, not just the porch. Exclude areas you do not need, such as a distant street or a neighbor's driveway.
The Ring app changes over time, and menu names may vary by camera. The Help page covers additional settings, including Motion Frequency and Video Settings.
What to expect in the first week
The first few days are the noisiest. CarGo begins with limited knowledge of your vehicles and improves with each Mine tap.
Tap Mine when your vehicles appear in Sightings, both arriving and leaving. A departing vehicle shows its back and is often farther from the camera, so CarGo needs examples of both views. Most improvement happens in the first couple of days.
CarGo may still miss a vehicle, especially at night or far from the camera. Treat an alert as something to review, not as proof. CarGo is a convenience, not a security or safety system.
iPhone and iPad
Apple only sends notifications from web apps added to the Home Screen, so this step is required on an iPhone or iPad.
- Open cargohold.io in Safari.
- Tap the Share button.
- Tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
- Open CarGo using the new icon on your Home Screen.
- Allow notifications when CarGo asks.
This requires iOS 16.4 or later, or iPadOS 16.4 or later on iPad.
Android
Open cargohold.io in Chrome and select Install when Chrome offers it. You can also select Add to Home screen from Chrome's menu. Open CarGo from the icon and allow notifications.
Once installed, CarGo also appears when you share a video from the Ring app. This is one way to teach CarGo a vehicle.
